Sketches!

In between paying gigs I try to sketch from the plethora of "reference" material I've got. These drawings are from those sessions. The guy with the hammer is from the Taschen Physique Pictorial collection.
These guys were from photos found online. Usually I only have time for a few drawings, just enough to loosen up, before I have to start working on something "real" (meaning with a deadline and what pays the bills :)

And now I want to encourage everyone who hasn't already done so, to get the new collection of Harry Bush artwork "Hard Boys". I just got my copy yesterday and it is GLORIOUS! I love the care that went into reproducing his delicate shading...often you can even see the patches and taped over areas of the drawings where Harry would constantly revise his art. The bio info is also well put together. It's sad to read that someone with such beautiful artwork was unhappy in his daily life. He reminds me a little of ol' Alex Toth in his seclusion and grumpy correspondence.
Buy this book or put it on your Christmas list...you will not be disappointed!
best,
j.

You can say that again. The Harry Bush book is PHENOMENAL!!! Loved every page... Another favorite is Allure by Robert W. Richards. You should check it out, if you haven't already.

Very good-looking sketches!
Have you thought of putting out a sketch collection, even a little one, as a lot of other artists do (but, you know, they mostly do sketches of female characters...)?

Marky Mark - Thanks for the recommendation. I've seen Robert Richards' work but didn't have the name of the artist. Nice stuff.

Francois - I've actually been thinking about that a lot lately. I thought I might try putting together a small collection and just using Lulu press to release it. I have Luc LaTulippe's book and a few others and the printing is just lovely.

Oh, and I promise it would be strictly Beefcake if I did put together a sketch book :)

I'm so relieved to know I'm not the only Harry Bush fan. I got my copy a while ago. I have been reading your blog religiously since 2005 and collected The Spirit because I love your inks and pencils. If you put out your own collection of sketches/drawings I'll pre-order my copy.

J,
I was just about to mention the Harry Bush book on my blog as well, but you beat me to it! I was also noticing the similarities between the trajectory of his life with Toth's. Both ended up sad and alone, totally alienated from family and friends. Very sad indeed. I often wonder if there wasn't some bi-polar issues at play with both of them. Anyway, I must have got my copy of the book around the same time you did, and I was truly amazing. The frustrating thing is that there is probably enough work to make more editions given the amount of work they said was just laying around his house at any given time. Makes me wonder what's going to happen to so many of us homo-erotic artists when our numbers are up?
